Canada's Golden Boys

Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky and Denny Morrison of Canada won gold in the Men's Team Pursuit today in front of an electrified crowd at the Oval.

The Canadian Men beat the Americans by only 0.21 seconds in a time of 3:41.37.

The Netherlands won the bronze medal in an Olympic record time of 3:39.95 in the B Final.

This brings Canada's medal total at the Richmond Olympic Oval to five with 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

In the Ladies' Team Pursuit, the Canadian team of Kristina Groves, Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler won their C Final today against the Netherlands in a time of 3:01.41 - the fastest Ladies skate of the day.

Germany took home the gold, Japan the silver and Poland the bronze.

Oval revamp to take a few months

The $178-million Richmond Olympic speed-skating oval will reopen to the public April 1 for group fitness classes, tours and meetings.

But general manager John Mills says it will take about another three months to fully convert the 32,000-square-metre building into a three-storey, multipurpose sports and fitness facility.
