Climbing Wall FAQs

What are the features of the Oval’s new sport climbing wall?

• The wall features 3 main sections: a 25’ beginner wall, a 38’ intermediate wall, and a 40’ overhanging corner section.
• The wall can accomodate 31 different routes suited to all skill levels
• The climbing wall will be set up for TOP ROPE, LEAD CLIMBING and some bouldering.
• The climbing surfaces will be a mix of vertical, bulge, overhanging and simulated crack features.
• A bridge extending from the fitness mezzanine will allow for physically disabled persons to rappel from the wall.

Who can use the wall?

• All climbers will need to pass a standard ‘belay test’ in order to climb. ($5 or no charge with Paid Monthly or Paid in Full Memberships). Children 5+ can use the wall under the supervision of an adult who has passed our belay test.
• Lead climbing testing is also done by our staff. Any climber passing the lead test may lead climb on designated routes.

How much will it cost to climb?

• Access to the climbing wall is included with your Oval membership, monthly memberships, drop in or 10 visit passes. Equipment rental and instructional programs are extra. There is no climbing only pricing. All users must pass a belay test prior to use.
• There is a 1 time climbing wall access fee for one month memberships, 10 visit flex pass or drop-in users.
• Lead climb testing is $10.
• A full range of instructional, day camps, birthday party, group and corporate team building programs are available.

When is the wall open for drop-in use?

• Check www.richmondoval.ca for current drop-in schedule.
• As the climbing wall is located within the track zone, certain events demand that we close the wall for safety reasons. We will send out notices to all registered climbers in advance to avoid inconvenience.

What else can I do at the Oval?

• Your membership or drop-in fee entitles you to a wide range of activities and amenities at the Oval. The fitness mezzanine, track, court and ice zones are at your disposal as schedules and availability permit. Speak to a Customer Service Representative for details.
• Secure lockers are available in the change rooms on the main floor. There is no charge for locker use.

The Oval is also home to a Freedom Climber, a rotating, non-motorized climbing wall. Check it out in the Fitness Centre for a vigorous, harness-free, safe and fun climb!
