lmost exactly one year ago, I was inside the Richmond Oval as Canada’s Kristina Groves sped across the finish line for an Olympic silver medal in ladies’ 1500-meter speed skating. The thousands of Canada fans packed into the bleachers erupted into cheers – cowbells clanging and red mittens waving wildly. It got so loud that the brand new Oval, thousands and thousands of square feet of glimmering steel, glass and wood, actually shook.

Vancouver Metro The local Olympic host cities may be buzzing a little less these days, but most of the Games facilities are still in frequent use. 1. The Richmond Oval hosted speedskating events during the Games and the hope now is that it helps revitalize the city’s downtown and spurs waterfront development, said oval spokesperson Aran Kay. A year after opening to the public as an athletic centre, the facility’s membership sales have far exceeded its targets and it is debt-free, Kay said.

On behalf of all of city council I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011. 2010 was a very exciting year for Richmond, the highlight of course being the Olympic Winter Games, where Richmond was showcased to the world with much success. During the 17 days of the Games more than 100,000 people went to the Richmond Olympic Oval to watch the world's best speedskaters set five new Olympic records and delight in Canada's five medals.
