Alex’s passion for sports and athletics has led him to become a strength and conditioning coach at the Oval. Attending courses with Athletes Performance, one of the most recognized organizations for training professional athletes, Alex has been able to learn and apply skills and knowledge learned there into training younger athletes. With a fitness and health promotions background through Niagara College, Alex has been personal training individuals as well as groups for over 6 years. He enjoys working with younger athletes, helping them increase their movement quality, strength, and their overall athletic ability. Being involved with athletics his whole life, Alex has had experience playing basketball, soccer, football, track and field, and baseball at competitive and non competitive levels. Always looking to further his knowledge, Alex is continually taking courses such as Olympic Weightlifting, TRX suspension training, and corrective exercise workshops to further help the athletes he trains.

Ashley’s enthusiasm for health and wellness has been a long time in the making. As a youth athlete in a variety of sports, she sought to learn about human movement. Ashley has completed her degree in Kinesiology and is Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA. Further education with Twist Sport Conditioning, TRX Certifications and Athletes Performance have shape her training style. She has experience training a variety of individuals from elite sport athletes, police officers and weekend warriors to cardiac care patients. Her training style integrates functional fitness, biomechanical efficiency and intense individually designed strength training programs to allow her clients to succeed in finding a healthy balanced lifestyle. Ashley’s energy, knowledge and enthusiasm allow her clients to push above and beyond for personal bests.

Fran has 13 years of industry experience as a Facility Manager/Supervisor, Conditioning Coach and Athletic Trainer. Fran has competed internationally as a Martial Artist, but finds more gratification as a leader, motivator, teacher and coach, inspiring athletes and up-and-coming fitness professionals. As a BIG fan of education and sport, Fran is always up for a mental and physical challenge. Whether snowboarding, playing soccer, hockey and baseball, or challenging an intellectual endeavor, Fran will function and think outside of the box!

With an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Victoria and a master’s degree in strength and conditioning from Edith Cowan University in Perth Australia, Matt has spent the last 13 years contributing to the high performance and national sport community as a conditioning coach, educator and IST lead. Highlights include opening the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence in Victoria, teaching as a faculty instructor in the Camosun College Sport and Exercise Education department and serving as the Technical Director for the BC Sport School Program. Matt has also been a strength and conditioning coach and integrated support team lead for several Canadian national teams including Golf Canada’s Amateur and Development programs and Canada Snowboard’s Slopestyle and Half Pipe teams. The highlight of Matt’s S&C coaching career thus far has been supporting the Canadian National Freestyle Snowboard team at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. While the majority of Matt’s time has been spent with professional and national team athletes, his true passion lies in the development of youth at the grassroots level. Matt focuses on scientific principles to guide his programming, his belief in motivating and inspiring athletes through strength and conditioning is what drives his day to day implementation.

Most recently Rob has attended Athletes Performance Level 1 & 2, Kettle Bell Certification and TRX Suspension Training. Being active is a huge component of Rob’s life in work and sport. He continues to use my own training to improve my athletic ability and health while fueling his competitive spirit.

Rob is a graduate from UBC with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a minor in nutritional sciences. A continuous learner, he always looks for new ways to grow as a coach and to keep up with advances in the strength and conditioning industry by regularly attending courses, conferences and seminars. His most recent course was the Titleist Performance Institute’s golf specific strength and conditioning certification. Rob brings experience in training and shadowing athletes in a variety of sports from golf to football, from the recreational to Olympic and professional levels. Rob brings an athlete-centric philosophy to his training of athletes at all levels. When he’s not coaching or traveling, Rob enjoys hockey, golf, muay thai and hiking in the backcountry with his wife.
Sams’ passion for fitness began at an early age while participating in a variety of sports. Now as a multi sport athlete, Sam continues to develop his fitness knowledge through education courses such as Athletes Performance Mentorship program, as well as participating in his favorite sports which include soccer and road cycling. Sam uses his knowledge gained from specific training courses to work with clients to create a safe, effective and fun program designed to meet particular fitness goals and needs. Sam excels at teaching his clients and empowering them to live a healthier life. Whether it’s an active or sedentary lifestyle, Sam is driven to take his clients to the next level.

Chris completed an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology while playing basketball at UBC Okanagan. Upon graduating he returned to Vancouver where he interned with the medical staff for the Vancouver whitecaps while working as strength and conditioning coach in North Vancouver. Chris has worked with athletes at the high school and college levels. He maintains involvement in the basketball community, head coaching high school teams, and serving as the high performance trainer for Basketball BC’s girls program including the provincial teams, centre for performance and working with Athletes targeted by Canada basketball. He is passionate about working with athletes of all levels and sports.
He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the NSCA, level 1 USA Weightlifting Coach, and certified personal trainer from the Canadian society for exercise physiology.

Head Volleyball Coach
Rayel brings a breadth of coaching and playing experience to her role as the Head Coach of the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence at the Richmond Olympic Oval . As a player, Rayel won two national championships during her club career with Fraser Valley Volleyball Club, and Team BC. She then went on to play for the UBC Thunderbirds where she won five CIS National Championship Titles, and served as team captain for two years. Rayel’s desire is to coach and give back to the community. She is committed to creating a high energy environment, where each player can maximize and utilize their full potential to succeed. And this success, Rayel believes, is not just measured on court, but off court as well.
Volleyball Coach & Richmond Virtual School Teacher
Beathen has been a teacher in the Richmond School District for 24 years. He has his Masters of Educational Administration, is an NCCP level 3 coach and most recently has become the RVS teacher coordinator of the High Performance programs at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Beathen is also the Assistant Coach for the UBC women’s team and has helped them to multiple National titles in his 15 years with the squad.

As a specialist in the area of Professional Goaltender Development, Pasco has guided over 50 goaltenders to full ride scholarships, has had 11 players drafted into the NHL, has coached three Hobey Baker Finalists, four National team members, and has a proven track record of success with aspiring youth players through to junior, college and the professional ranks.

Alex is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. Auld played in the National Hockey League with the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens. He has appeared internationally for Team Canada on three occasions in 2001, 2004 and 2006. Alex has a tremendous amount of professional playing experience with nearly 1/3 of the NHL’s teams and has been exposed to the some of the game’s greatest coaches behind the bench. His commitment to helping hungry athletes advance their careers from minor hockey to pro is completely aligned with our mission and is a natural fit.

Brendan has over 30 years of combined playing and coaching experience. Brendan has experience instructing goaltenders from Amateur to Professional including goaltenders from Major Midget, CIS, PIJHL, BCJHL, WHL, CHL, NAPHL, USHL, NCAA, EIHL, AHL and NHL.

Harrison was a former standout in the BCHL and CIS graduate at the University of Ottawa. After finishing his career playing in Australia for the Newcastle North Stars, Harrison had began to coach goaltenders throughout the lower mainland along with gaining his ACE personal training certification. Harrison is member of Sammartino goaltending and is a member of the Elite Goalies Staff in High Performance, Top Prospects and Center of Excellence programs.

Nate’s professional hockey career took him overseas for seven years playing in the Swiss National A League and the British Super League. During his four years tenure in New York City, Nate was the Athletic Director at the Saint Thomas Boarding School in Manhattan and Coaching and Director of Riverbank Hockey in West Harlem. Nate now resides in Vancouver, BC where he consults with numerous minor hockey associations, and instructs school hockey academies at Earl Marriott, Sentinel, and Semiahmoo Secondary Schools.
Lead On- Ice Skater Development Coach
Josh has played professional hockey in Europe and the United States for the past seven years. This past year he was a player assistant coach for the Brosov Corona Wolves in the Romania/Hungary/Slovakia (Mol Liga) as well as the head off-ice coach for the summer practices and throughout the season. He was named assistant coach for the Romanian National Hockey Team during the International Challenge Cup Tournament in Budapest, Hungary. Before this season he also coached Spring and Summer hockey teams for Pro 4 Sports in Delta, BC and has directed the dryland program for the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp for the past seven years. Josh has two years of university education at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, towards a Physical Education degree. I attended university on scholarship money from my time spent in the Western Hockey League. He is the Assistant Coach for the Burnaby Winter Club Academy U18 Prep team, and work as a Truperformance analyst for Detroit Red Wings Assitant Coach Jim Hiller. He has passed the Truperformance certification course that gives him the ability to accurately measure a player’s individual contribution to a hockey game.
Neil is an elite level professional defenceman. He holds the WHL Vancouver Giants records in games played and is 4th all-time in power play points, and 4th all-time in assists. He attended both the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers NHL development camps in consecutive years and attended the Team Canada World Junior camp in 2011. After his junior career, he opted to get his education at the Sauder School of Business at UBC. He finished with an honour degree in commerce specializing in Finance. Athletically Neil was a 3-time academic all-Canadian and was an assistant captain in his sophomore and junior year, while captaining the thunderbirds in his senior year. He also represented Team Canada at the University Games held in Granada, Spain in 2014.
Neil is a new addition to the Leslie Global Sports team in 2017 and we are excited, to say the least. Neil has helped out the Turcotte stickhandling camp for several years, who we admire, and has been a hockey camp coach for the Vancouver Giants camps and has done small group and one-on-one private sessions frequently during the past several summers. Neil brings passion to his on-ice sessions as he takes pride in seeing kids improve while enjoying themselves. There is nothing better than hearing the children after a session tell him how much fun they had. As a current professional player, Neil knows that if the game isn’t fun there is no point in playing. This love for the game is what keeps Neil going.

Mike Sommer was born and raised in White Rock, B.C.. A product of Semiahmoo Minor hockey he went on to play for the Delta Ice Hawks and the Grandview Steelers of the PIJHL. From 2011-2013 Mike lived in Queenstown, New Zealand where he played for the Southern Stampede of the NZIHL. For two seasons he was the Director of Hockey Development for the Queenstown Ice Hockey Club. Along with working with youth players, Mike was an assistant coach with the New Zealand U20 National Team. He coached at the Division III U20 World Championships in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2012 and in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2013 finishing with back to back bronze medals. Based in Vancouver as a member of the Leslie Global Sports staff, Mike works with various academies and teams within the lower mainland during the fall and winter, as well as with the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp and many LGS camps throughout the summer.

In describing Sven Butenschon‘s value to the LGS and Oval HP family, it’s a challenge to know where to begin. A few of Sven’s highlights include: Averaging 15 mins/game in the 2010 Winter Olympics with Team Germany in his home city of Vancouver, and 140 NHL games played (Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, & Vancouver Canucks). Sven played 20 seasons of professional hockey in the NHL, AHL, IHL, DEL, & WHL. He has played in front of 55’000 and 82’000 fans in German outdoor winter classics, was a 3rd round pick by the Penguins in 94, and won the Western Hockey League Championship in 1996 and made to the Memorial Cup in 2 straights seasons. In 2006 Sven was selected to the starting lineup in the AHL All Star game in front of his friends and family in his home province as a member of the Manitoba Moose in Winnipeg. He has been coached by Marc Crawford, Alain Vigneault, Dave King, Peter Laviolette, Dave Tippet, Uwe Krupp, & Craig McTavish to name a few. He played in Wayne Gretzky’s final game in Madison Square Garden in 1999. Sven is a leader on and off the ice. With LGS Sven will be on ice specializing in small area game and defensive skill development.

In our off season Ben is the Hockey Director of the Queenstown Ice Hockey Club in Queenstown New Zealand. He joined our coaching staff full time in the spring of 2016. Ben first began coaching in high school, as a lead instructor for his association’s weekly goaltender development sessions. Upon graduating Queen’s University in 2008, Ben spent 9 years as the Assistant Hockey Director of the Hollyburn Hockey Program in West Vancouver. Ben has led on-ice skills programs for players of all ages and abilities, and is responsible for implementing, developing and executing all hockey programs for Hollyburn Country Club’s membership. Ben is comfortable working with all ages, but is right in his comfort zone with novice aged players. His messaging is clear and consice. Kids, parents, and coaches are drawn to his patient and compassionate demeanor. His passion for coaching young players and mentoring volunteer coaches is admirable.
Now a lead instructor with Leslie Global Sports, Ben mentors players and coaches in the Richmond Oval High Performance Program, Vancouver Angels, Britannia Hockey Academy. Ben is involved with the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) in a variety of capacities, and has spent time as league manager, coaching clinic instructor and as a volunteer for the Midget Scholarship tournament.

Jan is currently working under long time Leslie Global Sports mentor Glen Williamson with National Team development in Hungary, as well as MAC club in Budapest. Our connection to Hungarian hockey development continues with Glen Williamson, Bob Leslie on the ground in Hungary pushing their development forward. Coach Jan brings an educational approach to development, having worked outside of hockey as a special aid teacher for kids with special needs and PE and science teacher in Sweden.

Lead Skills Coach, UBC Thunderbirds Men’s Assistant Coach,
Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Kelvin has been working in skill development and coaching professionally since 2001 where he worked with the Donnan, Vimy Ridge, and STM Hockey Academies while playing collegiate hockey with the Concordia Thunder of the ACAC. Kelvin moved to Vancouver in 2012 to coach with the North Shore Winter Club and the North West Giants of the BC Major Midget Hockey League. The 2016/17 season was Kelvin’s first as an Assistant Coach with the UBC Thunderbirds Men’s Varsity Hockey Team.
Coach of the Oval’s Table Tennis Centre of Excellence, graduated from the Beijing University of Physical Education as a Table Tennis major. Tian has been playing table tennis for 30 years in both China and Canada and has now dedicated her life to coaching. Ann specializes in coaching youth and possesses the highest certification as a National level Table Tennis Umpire in China.
Coach Khen comes to the Table Tennis Centre of Excellence from an exceptional coaching background of more than 35 years of competing and coaching. NCCP level 2 certified, he coaches players aged seven to 80, and even coached the seniors to win Provincial and US senior games. Other great successes include coaching and training junior players to win National Championships, and Khen has more than 10 years coaching experience from Provincial to National competitions.
Coach and High Performance Athlete: Mo joined the Oval coaching staff in 2013, as a two time Olympic table tennis athlete and Commonwealth Champion. Mo is an amazing athlete and coach and works closely with head coach YJ Liu and our High Performance athletes. Head Coach of the Oval’s Table Tennis Centre of Excellence, was born in Shanghai, China. Liu is a former Chinese National Table Tennis Tournament Champion and two-time champion of the Italian Premier Table Tennis Championship. He has also coached the Italian and Canadian National Table Tennis Teams. YJ coaches all levels but specializes in adults and high performance athletes.
Angel is a Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of BC and a member of the Dietitians of Canada and has provided nutrition counselling to over 2,000 clients using proven dietary strategies. She is the author of an upcoming book which talks about how to break through the biggest obstacles when it comes to achieving goals such as weight loss, weight management, and medical nutrition therapy for sports, heart health, and diabetes. Angel helps clients gain perspective and realize that even the most “impossible” goals can be achieved with dedication, perseverance, and quite frankly, simply doing what you say you will do.
Stephanie Dang, BSc, RD is a Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia. Stephanie graduated with her dietetics degree from the University of British Columbia with honors. She is currently working as a dietitian at BC Children’s Hospital, and has also joined the Richmond Oval as a sports dietitian. Stephanie is passionate about helping her clients reach their nutrition goals by empowering them to make great food choices, and providing them with evidence-based nutrition information. Whether you are a competitive or recreational athlete, proper nutrition can help you perform at your best!
