What is the OvalHP Athlete Development Program?

The Richmond Olympic Oval’s High Performance (Oval HP) Athlete Development program develops the physiological and movement capacities required to produce well- rounded and resilient athletes.

A comprehensive and developed skill set of physical attributes attained during the early years of training can have long term benefits and success in the young athlete’s discipline of choice. This is best reflected in the Canadian Sport for Life’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) in the Learn to Train, Train to Train, and Train to Compete stages. It is upon the basis of this model that Oval HP has created the Athlete Development programs.

Similar to how technical sport coaches teach the fundamental skills of a sport before progressing to more complex ideas or movements, Oval Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coaches teach and develop fundamental movements and physiological capacities before progressing to more complex training methods.  Taking into account an athlete’s practice and game schedule,  science based strength and conditioning principles are applied to increase performance, decrease injury risk, manage fatigue and coordinate tapering and peaking to ensure optimal competition performance.

Get Stronger for any sport with OvalHP’s year round Strength Program.  With flexible options for all athletes in any sport, each athlete completes an individualized strength program based on their physical growth, training age and sport related goals as aligned with the Canadian Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development Model.  This individualized approach allows for specialized attention to each athlete in their programming while still allowing for some room for independent training while under the eye of experienced strength coaches.

The Strength Program can easily be combined with any of our other Athlete Development Programs including ‘Speed and Acceleration’ and/or ‘Conditioning’  to develop the most resilient and well-rounded athlete possible.

The Athlete Development Conditioning Program is designed to target and develop the energy systems required to meet the specific demands of a sport. Each session utilizing a combination of different conditioning methods and equipment including, but not limited to, battle ropes, weighted sleds pushes and pulls, indoor cycling and field drills. The program will challenge both the body and mind in exciting ways to avoid the monotony of traditional conditioning methods.

Sprinters are known to be some of the most explosive type of athletes. The technical and physical development of one’s sprinting ability means improving overall as an athlete, which will help athletes excel in other sports. Participants in the specialized Athlete Development Speed & Acceleration Program will be instructed technically on how to progressively build linear speed while holding and increasing maximal speed. Technical drills will teach postures, rhythms and will progress athletes to be able to express more power in running situations.
