The provincial government released its 4 Step Restart Plan designed to progressively and safely bring back many activities to our community. The plan outlines “earliest start dates” at which additional re-opening measures may take place, provided specific health-related criteria are met. Oval staff are closely monitoring these criteria and planning how best to gradually increase customers’ access to Oval programs, services and facilities. As a multi-use centre that offers both sport and fitness, it is important that Oval procedures reflect the varying and activity-specific guidelines, restrictions and timelines related to distancing, capacity and mask use.
Today, the Province announced the move to Step 2 of the Restart Plan. Effective June 15, indoor games and practices for both adults and youth groups/teams can resume at the Oval. Physical distancing is not required on the field of play and competition is allowed. Under section 4G of the Ministerial Order for face coverings, mask use will be optional while participating in sport. This includes, but is not limited to, climbing, table tennis, hockey, figure skating and basketball. However, masks must still be worn in the common areas of the building.
At this time, the Provincial Indoor Exercise Requirements remains unchanged. As such, masks must be worn at all times while exercising. At the Oval, this includes the fitness centre, indoor group fitness classes and exercise during personal training sessions. Masks are optional for participants in outdoor group fitness classes.
Updates to Oval Sport and Fitness Drop-ins:
Basketball: Beginning Tuesday, June 15, small pick-up games of up to 3 vs. 3 will be permitted.
Table Tennis: All tables will return to court 4. Physical distancing requirements and capacity numbers remain unchanged.
Group Fitness: Beginning Monday, June 21, group fitness classes will be available in multiple locations including on the Olympic Riverside Plaza, court 10, and some low-intensity in-studio classes with limited capacity
Individual Strength Pods: The last day to book an individual strength pod session will be Thursday, June 17.
Thank you for your continued support and patience. We will continue to enhance access and service levels in tandem with the Province’s Restart Plan. As more information becomes available, we will be sure to keep our customers informed of any new developments.
