Conditions of Entry, Rules and Conduct

The Richmond Olympic Oval is a dynamic facility for various sports and fitness activities. While enjoying the facility, visitors are reminded to stay attentive to their surroundings and personal belongings, follow staff instructions, and treat others with care and respect. To maintain a welcoming environment for everyone, please familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct and rules.

Conditions of Entry, Rules and Conduct

  • 01

    General

    A “Visitor” shall include any individual on the Richmond Olympic Oval property.  

    The “Facility” shall define the Richmond Olympic Oval building at 6111 River Road, surrounding outdoor plazas, as well as any equipment or satellite locations that may be used for Richmond Olympic Oval programming.  

    The “Richmond Oval” shall define the staff and personnel of the Richmond Olympic Oval.  

    • Visitors must comply with all posted Facility rules, regulations and codes of conduct as established from time to time, and shall abide by all Richmond Oval staff directions.   
    • The Visitor shall use the Facility solely for the purposes permitted based on access, and for no other purpose. Visitors are financially responsible for any damage to the Facility or its equipment resulting from their use.   
    • By entering the Facility, the Visitor consents to video recording and photography captured by security cameras, media teams, Oval staff, or members of the public. These images may be used for operational, promotional, archival, or public communications purposes. If you do not wish to be recorded, please speak to Guest Services prior to entering. The Richmond Oval is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal property. Visitors are encouraged to use provided lockers.   
    • External coaches or trainers are prohibited without written Richmond Oval consent. Using unapproved trainers or coaches may lead to suspension or termination of facility access.   
    • Visitors shall not unreasonably interfere with Facility operations or infringe upon the rights of others.   
    • Facility use must not promote hatred, discrimination, or contempt towards any person or group, and visitors must act respectfully and lawfully. Abusive language or illegal, aggressive, or inconsiderate behavior may result in the termination of Facility access.   
    • Visitors agree to conduct themselves safely and respectfully towards others and staff, and to avoid interfering with staff duties.   
    • The Richmond Oval reserves the right to refuse entry to or eject any individual behaving illegally, disruptively, or aggressively at the discretion of the Richmond Oval.    
    • The Richmond Oval reserves the right to take necessary action, including suspending or canceling facility access at its discretion, to ensure compliance with Facility rules and regulations.

    Ice Rink

    • CSA-approved multi-impact hockey helmets are mandatory for all skaters aged 12 and under.   
    • Skate at a controlled speed. Slower skaters and skate assist users should stay on the outer section of the ice. Be aware of others around you.   
    • Skating direction. Skaters must always skate in the direction designated by Oval staff.  
    • Wear skates only on approved surfaces and not on concrete or bleachers.   
    • Shoes are prohibited on the ice. All visitors are required to wear skates while on the ice.   
    • Speed skating is prohibited during public skating sessions.   
    • Skaters are prohibited from sitting on the boards.   
    • Do not bring food or drinks onto the ice.   
    • To ensure safety for all, we request that children are not carried while on the ice.   
    • Personal belongings should be stored in blue cubbies or lockers in the facility. It is recommended that skaters refrain from carrying personal items while skating.

    Fitness Centre

    • Age Restrictions – Members 13-16 years of age must complete a youth orientation with our fitness staff. Members 13 and 14 years of age must be supervised by a parent or guardian. 
    • Proper athletic attire including closed toed athletic shoes must be worn 
    • Limit your mobile phone use and be respectful of those around you 
    • Limit cardio use to 30 minutes during busy periods 
    • Guest must adhere to the code of conduct as outlined in the membership agreement 
    • Wipe down all equipment after use 
    • Collars are recommended when using free weight bars. See fitness staff if you require spotting assistance. 
    • Re-rack your weight and return all equipment to its proper place after use. 
    • Share equipment with other members. Allow other to “work in” when resting between sets. 
    • Collateral is required to borrow equipment. See fitness staff for details.  
    • Food is not permitted in the fitness centre. Water and sport drinks must be in a resealable container. 
    • All personal belongings must be stored in lockers or cubbies provided.  
    • External personal trainers are not permitted, for liability and legal purposes.  
    • Refrain from wearing fragrances. 
    • Sport equipment is not permitted (ie: Balls, rackets, etc.). Please store in the lockers provided. 
    • Foul language or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.  

    Fitness staff are dedicated to ensuring a safe and positive training environment for all members and guests. Your cooperation is appreciated.

    Group Fitness

    • Cancel your reservation more than 3 hrs. before class time using the Oval App so those waitlisted can be notified. 
    • Arrive a minimum 5 minutes before class time. Entry may not be permitted after the start time to avoid injury 
    • Space may only be reserved by the person present – no holding spots for others. Please be prepared to shift so everyone can fit safely in the studio. 
    • Ensure you are wearing non-marking athletic shoes. If taking Yoga or Pilates, remove your shoes and place them at the back of the studio, or along the perimeter. 
    • Sanitize and return equipment to their proper place. 
    • Bring your own Yoga and Pilates mat to Flow Studio. 
    • Mute cell phone, and take conversations outside of the studio. 
    • Refrain from wearing perfume or scented products. 
    • New to class? Please introduce yourself to the instructor so they can get to know you! If attending RIDE, and you need a “bike fit”, arrive 5-10 min. early 
    • Participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age. 
    • No food or drink. Water is recommended. 
    • The Richmond Olympic Oval is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

    Climbing Wall

    Safety at the Climbing Wall is Everyone’s Responsibility.
    Climbing involves inherent risks. All participants must exercise care and attention at all times. If you notice any safety concerns, please report to Oval climbing staff immediately. 

    We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for everyone. Inappropriate conduct or language will not be tolerated. Disregard for the Code of Conduct may result in denial of service and/or cancellation of participant or spectator rights. If you have any questions or concerns, please approach Oval climbing staff. 

    WAIVERS AND CHECK-IN 

    Check-In Process: Spectators and Participants must check in at the climbing desk before entering the climbing wall area. 

    First-Time Participants: Each first-time participant must receive an orientation conducted by Oval climbing staff.  Before accessing the Climbing Wall, each participant must have: 

    • A signed waiver.
      A completed Acknowledgment of Orientation. 
    • A valid membership or day pass. 

     AGE REQUIRMENTS 

    Ages 0-4: Not permitted to access the climbing area outside of registered programs. 

    Ages 5-14: Must be supervised by an adult (19 and older). The supervising adult must have: 

    • An MBO Account. 
    • A signed waiver. 
    • Completed Acknowledgment of Orientation. 

    SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS 

    • Ages 5-8: 1 adult per 2 children; the supervisor may not climb and must remain within arm’s reach of the child(ren). 
    • Ages 9-14: 1 adult per 4 children; the supervisor may climb but must maintain a clear line of sight to the child(ren). 

    Note: Supervising adult(s) must have an MBO Account, signed waiver and completed Acknowledgment of Orientation. 

    BELAYING 

    Belay Competence: Participants 15 years and older wishing to top-rope or lead belay must demonstrate competence during a belay check procedure. 

    Belay Check: The belay check is pass/fail at the discretion of the Oval climbing staff.  Oval climbing staff cannot provide coaching during the belay check. 

    Belay Tags: All participants who pass the belay check will be issued a belay tag, which must be displayed on their harness while belaying. 

    Belay Devices: Only autoblock or assisted braking devices are allowed. Tube-style devices are not permitted. If unsure, consult staff. Gri-gris or ATC Pilots are available for borrowing with a government-issued ID. 

    Knot Requirement: The Figure 8 knot is the only accepted knot for tie-in. 

    LEAD CLIMBING GUIDELINES 

    • Participants must pass a top rope belay check before attempting a lead belay check. 
    • Lead climbing is only permitted on designated routes. 
    • Do not use anchors adjacent to a lead climber during a lead climb. 
    • Safety First: Do not skip clips or take large, reckless falls. 

    BOULDERING 

    • All participants wishing to boulder must receive a safety orientation from climbing staff. 
    • Bouldering is only permitted in designated bouldering areas. 
    • Participants must not climb higher than the top of the bouldering wall. 

    AUTO BELAYS AND SPEED CLIMBING 

    • All participants wishing to use the speed wall or auto belay systems must receive a safety orientation from climbing staff. 
    • Participants aged 5-14 must be supervised by an adult when clipping in and out of the auto belay system. 

    GENERAL RULES 

    • No cell phones, food, drinks, or bare feet are allowed on the climbing pads. 
    • No running, jumping, wrestling, or tumbling on the climbing floor. 
    • No swinging or pulling on the ropes. 
    • No writing on the wall with chalk or any other substance. 
    • Climbing shoes are mandatory for all participants. 
    • Personal items must be stored in the blue cubbies or lockers in change rooms. 
    • Government-issued ID is required to borrow belay devices. 
  • 06

    Table Tennis

    • All participants must have a reservation in the active timeslot to enter the table tennis area. 
    • All participants must check in at the sport desk upon arrival.  
    • Any participants who do not have a reservation in the active timeslot will be asked to leave the area. 
    • Participants must exit the area promptly at the end of their reserved timeslot. 
    • Tables designated for shared usage or doubles play must be used as shared spaces. 
    • Table reservations or priority access are only permitted for Oval staff and programs. 
    • Multi-ball use is not permitted. 
    • Refrain from bringing food and beverages onto the court with the exception of water
