From December 15, 2023, to January 6, 2024, our hardwood courts will be closed for repairs and maintenance. Expect a dazzling transformation on January 7, 2024, when the hardwood makes a grand re-opening with a brand-new top finish. Once complete, you can expect to see a fresh new look with enhanced performance.
What is involved in court refinishing, you may wonder? The Oval’s six hardwood courts will be cleaned and then sanded, which kicks up a lot of dust in the surrounding area. Once smooth, various sport lines will be painted and the entire surface will be varnished, which is a very smelly process. Finally, the fumes will be off-gassed, and the finish cured. Refinishing the courts is a significant project that needs to be done every few years to improve the performance of the surface, while also extending the lifespan of the courts.
To make sure we bring you the best improvements possible, the Oval will be closed temporarily to allow for the odours from the court refinishing to dissipate. In addition to our regular holiday hours on December 24 (7:00 am to 4:30 pm) and December 25 (closed), the Oval will be closed from December 26, 2023, to January 1, 2024. During these seven days, you can enjoy Watermania, City Centre and Thompson Community Centres by showing your Oval membership card. We’ll be back in action on January 2, 2024.
