Learn to Skate classes are now organized by skill level.

Please review the skill descriptions below before registering to ensure your child is placed in the appropriate class. Registering for the correct level helps avoid changes once the session begins. Please note: • Registrations in levels above a child’s ability will be removed and refunded. • Children registered below their ability may find the class unchallenging. If you’re unsure of your child’s level, please review the skill breakdown at the bottom of this page and/or contact our Head Coach: tbarn@richmondoval.ca.

Preschool (Ages 3-5)

Learn to Skate Preschool is the perfect first-time-on-ice program. Led by experienced instructors, it builds fundamental skating skills while helping children have fun and gain confidence, preparing them for sports like figure skating, hockey, ringette, and speed skating.

  • No Experience: For children with little or no skating experience, including those who have only skated with assistance; classes begin off-ice to build comfort and confidence.
  • Levels 1–2: Can stand up independently and move forward and backward on the ice.

Child (Ages 6-12)

This progressive program focuses on strengthening core skating skills. Skaters will build control, balance, and technique while preparing for ice sports like figure skating, hockey, ringette, and speed skating.

  • No Experience: For children with little or no skating experience, including those who have only skated with assistance.
  • Advanced Levels 4–6: Confident edge control, slalom, crossovers, tight turns, and directional jumps.
